Eastbourne Open predictions

With just a week to go until Wimbledon, the ATP and WTA Tours are off to the seaside this week for the always insightful Eastbourne Open.

Reigning men's champion Taylor Fritz is back to defend the title he won 12 months ago and the American is a warm favourite to clinch a fourth Denvonshire Park crown.

The American's biggest threat may come from Czech teenager Jakub Mensik, who has shown on the ATP Tour this year that he could be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

The 19-year-old is already a winner on tour, having beaten Novak Djokovic in the final of March's Miami Open, and he defeated Britain's Cameron Norrie at Queen's last week.

The big-serving right-hander, who beat Fritz during his run to the Miami title, has limited grass-court experience but his game suggests he should be a dangerous player on the surface.

In the women's draw, Daria Kasatkina is 10-1 to retain the title she won 12 months ago.

However, another previous winner looms large in the draw, with Jelena Ostapenko returning to a tournament she was victorious in back in 2021.

The Latvian then lost to Petra Kvitova in the final a year later before making the quarters in 2023, when she was forced to pull out through injury.

Ostapenko has been handed a tricky opening test against Britain’s Sonay Kartal, but if she can get through that the draw looks kind.

World number 31 Magda Linette is a likely quarter-final opponent for the 2017 French Open champion and she cannot face top seed Kasatkina or 11-2 tournament favourite Emma Raducanu until the final.
