Esperance de Tunis vs Chelsea predictions
Chelsea's defeat by Flamengo cost them any chance of winning Group D at the Club World Cup, but they can still ease through to the knockout rounds in second place by defeating Esperance de Tunis in Philadelphia.
The Blues established a 1-0 half-time lead in Friday's fixture against Flamengo and seemed on course for maximum points, but they lost focus in the second half to lose 3-1 while substitute Nicolas Jackson gave manager Enzo Maresca an additional headache when he was dismissed just four minutes after going on and picking up a suspension.
It was a learning experience for several Chelsea players and also Maresca, who tinkered with his formation by deploying an extra midfielder and didn't get the performance he was looking for.
Chelsea's loss left them three points adrift of Flamengo and level with their final group opponents Esperance de Tunis, who got their campaign up and running with a hard-fought 1-0 success over Los Angeles FC.
However, the Blues have a marginally better goal difference which gives them the security of knowing that they need just a draw to advance to the next round.
Only a victory over the Premier League side would be enough for Esperance to progress, but they could soon find themselves forced back by a Chelsea side with a point to prove.
Maresca will want his players to assert themselves from the first whistle and may revert to a more offensive 4-2-3-1 set-up with a midfielder sacrificed and an attacker, probably Noni Madueke, recalled to the side.
The Tunisian champions will probably employ a deep-lying defence, aiming to be hard to break down and hoping for a moment of magic from 33-year-old Algerian attacking midfielder Youcef Belaili, who was their star player and goalscorer against Los Angeles.
However, Esperance were previously outclassed in their 2-0 loss to Flamengo and they may struggle to keep a lid on a Chelsea side packed with talent and stung by their recent defeat.
An early flight home is the last thing in Chelsea's thoughts and it can be avoided with their highest-scoring success of the tournament.
