Impressive in the Fred Darling but her subsequent efforts, upped to 1m, in the 1,000 Guineas (comfortably held) and Irish equivalent (finished fourth) suggest she ideally needs a return to 7f; now goes in cheekpieces; not certain to get home.

Finished behind some of these rivals in the Irish 1,000 Guineas but probably needed that reappearance run; thoroughly consistent 2yo campaign (213122) culminated in good efforts behind Desert Flower, the subsequent 1,000 Guineas winner; bounce-back looks plausible.

Good second in the Albany on this card last year, then landed two Group prizes; creditable third, one place behind stablemate Flight, in the 1,000 Guineas but was soundly beaten in the Irish version; chance partly depends on how well she responds to first-time headgear.

Didn't quite live up to expectations in 7f Group 3 at Lingfield on reappearance; showed abundant promise in two runs last year and may still do better but this looks a difficult task; yard also runs Chantilly Lace, who already has Group 1 form.

Tough and consistent sort whose record reads 912233124, most recently running well in the French 1,000 Guineas on good ground (hampered close home; bare form can be marked up); ties in closely with Zarigana on that effort and Boussac running; this Ballydoyle filly holds solid claims and again should be thereabouts.

Good second in the 1,000 Guineas (good to firm) on seasonal debut, despite racing in the smaller group away from the main action for most of the way; failed to back up that effort in the Irish equivalent (finished sixth) but may rebound, having been very consistent (221332) otherwise.

Granddaughter of brilliant Zarkava; progressive filly whose form figures read 11211, most recently awarded the French 1,000 Guineas (good) after a stewards' inquiry (she suffered interference in the straight); went very close in last year's Boussac in her only other Group 1 attempt; trainer landed this prize in 2019; possibly hasn't reached her ceiling yet; leading contender.

Has proved largely consistent and ran well in the Irish 1,000 Guineas (first Group 1 attempt) most recently, taking form figures this season to 323; half-sister to a Royal Ascot (Britannia) winner; again likely to give her running but needs improvement to come out on top.

Comfortably justified favouritism in 2yo novice event at Salisbury (7f, heavy) that her trainer won in 2022 with a filly who subsequently finished second twice at Group 1 level, including in this race; ran well in the 1,000 Guineas (good to firm) on reappearance, finishing fifth (beaten just over 2l); possibilities with further improvement on the cards.

Supplemented for this race at a cost of £46,000; impressive in sole 2yo start (8.5f, AW) then followed up in Listed grade at Newmarket (1m2f, good to firm) where she raced exuberantly in front but wasn't for catching; missed the Oaks due to doubts over the trip/track and the French Oaks due to scoping dirty shortly beforehand; looks likely to cope well with this drop back in distance and is an exciting contender, being a very promising filly who could easily prove Group 1 class.

Supplemented for this contest at a cost of £46,000; improving filly who is 3-3, most recently driven out for half-length success in Listed grade at York (1m, good to firm) on turf debut; now partnered for the first time by William Buick, who rode a Group 1 winner for these connections last season; very interesting upped further in class, with her bubble yet to be burst and limitations not yet exposed.

This is a slightly substandard Coronation Stakes, judged on the figures, but some of the main contenders have the potential to rate higher still, particularly the unbeaten fillies FALAKEYAH and Kon Tiki who head the shortlist. The selection is hugely promising and should be suited by the trip given her exuberance over further last time, while the second choice is improving very nicely. French runner Zarigana sets the standard as things stand and accordingly warrants major respect, while January and Exactly give Aidan O'Brien a solid-looking hand.

What happened in the Coronation Stakes last year?

down

PORTA FORTUNA gained back-to-back wins at the royal meeting in the Coronation Stakes. Donnacha O’Brien’s versatile filly landed the Albany over 6f when partnered by Frankie Dettori in 2023. Following a Cheveley Park success under Oisin Murphy and a runner-up finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, Porta Fortuna returned at three when finishing second to Elmalka in the 1,000 Guineas. She was beaten just a neck at Newmarket and proved a mile is no issue to her with a length success over Opera Singer for Tom Marquand in this event. Ramatuelle, the 15-8 favourite, finished third and Elmalka was back in fourth.
