Newmarket debut winner who wasn't helped by a slow start when runner-up to Secret Hideaway in a Listed race at York (5f, good to firm); while this assignment demands appreciably more, her trainer knows a thing or two about winning 2yo races here and he's always rated her.

Didn't need much encouragement to land the odds at Kempton in early April (5f, AW; 4-7); had to bypass a Chester engagement the following month, so she's back from a lengthy break, but as an unbeaten filly representing strong connections she merits a second look.

Long odds-on when breezing clear on Wolverhampton debut and probably went off a bit hot when found wanting into a headwind at York (5f, Listed; behind Secret Hideaway and Harry's Girl); could be a sharp improver if able to secure some cover this time and certainly not ruled out.

125,000euros yearling and a sister to connections' Group 1 Nunthorpe winner Winter Power; it's 25 years since Tim Easterby won the Queen Mary with Romantic Myth and he soon nominated this race as a likely target after this filly's winning debut at Thirsk (5f, good to firm; 22-1); she did well to win at all as there were glaring signs of inexperience before she ate up the ground late on; could be interesting.

Dam was a Listed-placed 5f 2yo winner; beaten at Ripon on debut but then popped up at 33-1 in a Listed race at York (5f, good to firm), beating some of these in the process; given the strong headwind at York, she probably benefited from enjoying some crucial cover; still commands a level of respect with Listed honours already in the bag.

Twice beaten but runner-up in a 5f Listed race on debut and headed late on at Navan (6f, good) by stablemate Gstaad who ran away with yesterday's Coventry; this drop back to a stiff 5f might be just the ticket at this junction of her career and connections seem hopeful of a big run; player.

Starspangledbanner filly out of a dual Listed winner for this yard; beat only three rivals when winning on debut at Newmarket in early May (5f, good to firm; 7-2) but the second had shown promise the run before and this filly impressed in asserting late on, clocking eyecatching fractions in the process; a 45-day break is lengthier than ideal but she has to enter the reckoning.

Bred to be sharp - her sire won the Norfolk - and she fetched 55,000gns at the breeze-up sales; had no trouble holding an early position before displaying a taking turn of foot to win comfortably from Justice Twice on debut over C&D (good to firm; 12-1) in early May; that was a quick time and course experience has to be an asset; thereabouts.

190,000euros yearling representing the 2002 winning trainer; 2yos from this yard rarely win first time out and she duly found improvement to collect at Bath (5f, firm); however, that form is none too convincing heading into an assignment of this magnitude.

Must be held in high regard to have contested the Listed Marygate at York first time out and she was beaten under 4l (behind four of these) despite hitting some traffic; comfortably justified odds of 4-9 from the front at Ripon (6f, good) and could be a lively one at lengthy odds; looks quick enough for 5f.

Her sire Leinster was a high-class sprinter who excelled on good and quicker ground; this US challenger won on dirt first time out and then showed bright speed before storming clear in the Royal Palm at Gulfstream Park (5f, firm) which her compatriot Crimson Advocate also won en route to taking this two years ago; Royal Ascot was on the radar for this filly even before Gulfstream, hence her trainer's keenness to gain some experience on turf; big player; has worn these blinkers for both her runs.

320,000gns breeze-up buy and a half-sister to last year's Coventry fifth Al Qudra; dam won over 5f; made debut at Naas (5f, good) and showed some serious mid-race speed before ultimately conceding to the stronger-staying colt Charles Darwin (who had raced twice already) and there's a lot to look forward to on the evidence of that promise; while it's rare for a maiden to win this, she's a likely contender under Oisin Murphy.

Bought at the breeze-up sales in April for 375,000gns; knew her job at Yarmouth (5f, good to firm) where she chased the pace within herself before quickening clear in a good time; the runner-up getting turned over next time at Catterick was a blow to the form, but this filly has been a market mover and needs considering.

Bought for $600,000 at a US breeze-up sale; weak 10-1 at the Curragh (6f, good) but showed plenty of pace and kept on to be beaten only 2l in a traditionally warm maiden; while she's fully entitled to benefit enormously for that experience, it has to rate a negative that her owner's retained rider David Egan jumps ship to Love Olivia.

Sent off favourite but not a strong one when behind Guernsey Lady and Justice Twice on debut at Lingfield (5f, good); lacked experience and wasn't ideally positioned, so every chance of reversing placings with both those rivals; has many others to worry about, though, and James Doyle prefers Zelaina.

Recruited at the breeze-ups for £650,000; the race she won at Nottingham (5f, good) has been a good pointer towards this meeting and that was a no-nonsense performance from the front, collecting by a shade under 3l; the time didn't blow your socks off but she's evidently held in high regard by her trainer who has won two of the last three Queen Marys with once-raced fillies.

True Love
With only one winner exiting a single-figure box in the last decade, being drawn mid to high has provided a notable edge. The Queen Mary has so far eluded Aidan O'Brien, but he has been talking up the chances of TRUE LOVE who was outstayed by a smart colt over Navan's stiff 6f last time. This filly, like so many from her yard, looks nailed on to progress with racing. US raider Lennilu (second choice) looked the real deal in how she went about her business at Gulfstream, and compatriot Crimson Advocate was similarly impressive in that same race en route to taking this two years ago. Zelaina was the talk of Nottingham ahead of her stylish debut and bids to make it three Queen Marys in four years for Karl Burke, whose Love Olivia could also be interesting if ridden with greater patience than at York. Also on the shortlist is Cardiff By The Sea who, for a debutante, ran a mighty race at Naas when giving Norfolk favourite Charles Darwin something to think about. The booking of Oisin Murphy raises expectations further. Staya, Spicy Marg, Revival Power and, at greater odds Solana Rose, are others to bear in mind.

What happened in the Queen Mary Stakes last year?

down

Owners Wathnan Racing were on the scoresheet for the meeting after the success of LEOVANNI in the day two opener. The Karl Burke-trained filly was an impressive winner at Nottingham on her debut just two weeks before this race and the quick turnaround proved no issue for the daughter of Kodi Bear. James Doyle’s mount was sent off a 22-1 shot and quickened smartly over a furlong out for a ready success by a length and three quarters in the 5f juvenile sprint. The places were filled by 50-1 chances Mighty Eriu and Maw Lam.
